Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic:

One day the world's oil and gas reserves will run out. The search for alternative energy sources like wind power, solar power, burning waste, and water power are causing as much environmental damage as the oil and nuclear power sources they are intended to replace.

• How far do you agree with this latter statement?
  What possible benefits do the alternative energy sources bring? Or what damage do they cause?

You should write at least 250 words.

My answer:

Alternative energy such as wind power, solar energy, burning waste, water power has been of great concern, especially when worries about limited fossil fuel are increasing. Environmental issues related to this have given rise to controversial ideas.

Some people believe that alternative energy may damage the environment as much as the oil and nuclear power. Wind power, for instance, requires huge turbines to operate in enormous distant areas, which is complaint as aesthetically disturbing by many people. Beside the likelihood to destroy the landscape’s beauty, those turbines could threaten the wild birds while they are flying across. Likewise, burning garbage is likely to produce by-product causing air pollution. On the other hand, site clearance to construct dams could have negative impact on neighboring wildlife and residents.

However, others, myself included, are of the opinion that the benefits from alternative energy far outweigh its disadvantages. Like the name itself, alternative energy is renewable and sustainable to human’s life as this sort of energy does not produce carbon emissions, neither contributing to green house effect nor global warming. Another argument put forward is that thanks to advanced technology, techniques and equipments utilized to manufacture renewable energy would reduce its complexity and costs in order to minimize its potential effect on the surroundings. It will be likely in the same way that tiny solar cells have been attached to the calculators instead of larger solar panels at first. In other words, huge turbines could be of smaller size, side-effects from burning rubbish would be minimized.

On a general note, it’s worth harnessing wind, water, solar energy, etc., to produce alternative energy, so that human can lead a greener life in the years to come.
